Surviving Long-Haul Flights in Economy
Most of us have to endure economy flights, at least sometimes.
It’s not so bad until it gets longer than about three hours for me.
I upgrade whenever possible, but sometimes I get stuck in “those” seats. 😞
All we can really do is try to make it as comfortable as possible.
Think about all the things you dislike about it the most, and think of what you can do to make each one better.
For example, if you want to sleep it away, get a window seat, a good pillow, and some melatonin.
If you hate the temperatures — cold, then hot, then cold — wear layers and bring a blanket or jacket.
After more than a decade of international travel and many long flights in economy, these are my best tips to survive a long (especially) overnight flight.
Do I like it? No, but these tips make it bearable, and I can endure it until I reach my destination.
Always be prepared for anything. ☝️
Time to start planning
✅ Bring a pillow that helps you sleep on a plane. This is different for everyone. My personal favorite is this one. It helps with leaning, even without a window seat.
✅ Wear (or change into) comfy clothes and shoes.
✅ Wear layers and bring a blanket or jacket because temperatures change frequently on a plane.
✅ I like to book an overnight flight as early in the evening as possible. Because I stay up late normally, it doesn’t feel as much like “overnight.”
✅ Bring your own snacks and water in case you don’t like the food they serve, or if it’s a flight that doesn’t serve much.
✅ Always have a portable charger in case the charger on the plane doesn’t work, or there isn’t one.
✅ Noise-canceling headphones help a lot to block out noise.
✅ Download movies to your phone or iPad in case the in-flight entertainment doesn’t work.
✅ Bring whatever essentials help you the most. Mine are melatonin, lip balm, hand lotion, contact case, eye drops, hand sanitizer, and medications. Also, my laptop. 😊
✅ Be sure to keep the essentials you’ll need on the plane in your personal item under the seat so it’s easy to access.
