Packing for Long Flights: Your In-Flight Survival Kit
Long flights can be very uncomfortable, especially if you’re in certain economy seats , but they can be bearable if you prepare in advance.
I’m going to show you what I take with me on airplanes to make long flights more comfortable.
I recommend you keep these things in your personal item under the seat so they are within reach, and you don’t have to get into your carry-on overhead. One of my favorite personal items is this backpack.
Here’s what I think is important to have near you:
Essential Items
Portable power bank, international outlet adaptor, and charging cord – You never want to let your phone battery die. There are USB outlets on many planes, but they may occasionally not work. You’ll need an international adaptor on international airlines.
Earbuds and AirFly – These can be used to listen to in-flight entertainment without corded headphones. I also use my earbuds for my phone and laptop.
Entertainment or work devices – Even if there are entertainment screens, they may not work, so have a phone, tablet, or laptop with podcasts, shows, or movies downloaded in advance. If you need to get some work done, make sure you have the devices for that.
Snacks – I always take snacks in case I don’t like what they have on planes, or if I want something between meals. Sometimes I bring things from home, and sometimes I pick up something in the airport.
Water bottle – It’s important to stay hydrated. It makes you feel better and helps with jet lag. You can take a water bottle, but you’ll have to fill it after security. You can also ask for water on the plane instead if you prefer.
Medications – These should always be with you. Obviously, have any prescription meds you need, but things like ibuprofen, motion sickness meds, and melatonin for sleep are also good to have.
Pen – This is needed sometimes for customs forms.
Comfort Items
Layers of clothing – Temperatures can vary widely and change frequently on planes, so have a light bottom layer plus thicker tops, a jacket or blanket or scarf.
Compression socks – These are a big help with swelling and circulation.
Eye mask and earplugs or noise-canceling headphones – These all help with shutting out everything around you so you can sleep.
Pillow – Everyone seems to like different pillows. I’ve tried many, and this one is the only one that really helps me. It’s a side pillow, which helps me lean.
Refresh Items
Face wipes or body wipes – Being able to freshen up a little makes you feel better, making the flight a little more comfortable.
Deodorant – Don’t forget this!
Toothbrush and toothpaste – Brushing my teeth is one thing that makes me feel a lot better. I like to do it in the airport before and after a flight.
Lip balm and hand lotion – The air on a plane dries everything out, so these are essential for me.
Mini brush – I take a brush everywhere with me, including on a plane. Be respectful of others, and use it in the restroom.
I love to travel, but I have to admit that I do not love flying. I upgrade when I can, but when I can’t, I make sure I have everything I can to make the flight more bearable.
I hope you have found these things helpful, so you can enjoy your flights a little more. 🤗
